Comparative Study: Aspirin, Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen
ASPIRIN
Aspirin is
widely used for relieving pain and reducing fever in adults.
Aspirin also relieves mild itching and reduces swelling and
inflammation. As it is effective against pain, swelling and
inflammation, aspirin is often specifically recommended for
treating arthritis, as well as many other conditions and
injuries. However, people who have the following problems are
cautioned against taking aspirin:
?People who get
stomach irritation after taking aspirin,
?People who are
allergic to aspirin,
?People who take
blood thinners, and
?People who have a
hangover.
In
addition, a person should not take aspirin if he or she has
ulcers or gout. Also, people with asthma or hearing loss may
have problems taking aspirin. Children and teenagers should not
take aspirin as its use in these age groups is associated with a
rare and serious brain and liver disorder called Reye’s
syndrome.
ACETAMINOPHEN
Acetaminophen relieves mild pain and reduces fever as
effectively as aspirin, but does not reduce inflammation, making
it ineffective for treating arthritis. However, acetaminophen
can be used by people who can’t take aspirin because of
aspirin-related allergic reactions, stomach irritation or
ringing in the ears. In addition, acetaminophen is safe for
infants, children and teens. Common brands of acetaminophen
include Tylenol and Panadol.
While acetaminophen is recommended over aspirin for
some people, it does have some side effects. High doses or
regular, long-term use can cause liver damage, especially if
used with alcohol. Acetaminophen should not be used on a regular
basis by people who suffer from anemia or liver or kidney
diseases. In addition, it should not be used without a doctor’s
recommendation to treat:
?A fever over 103.1
degrees for more than three days, or
?Recurring fever.
IBUPROFEN
Ibuprofen is effective for relief of pain, fever and
inflammation, and for many people, is an effective alternative
to aspirin for the treatment of arthritis. It is also less
irritating to the stomach than aspirin and does not cause
ringing in the ears. It does not cause severe liver problems
like acetaminophen. There is less information on the effects of
ibuprofen on children and so many docts still consider
acetaminophen as the safest drug for children and teenagers.
Ibuprofen is not safe for use if a person has:
?Asthma and nasal
polyps
?A stomach or
intestinal disorder
?A skin condition
called angioedema
?An allergic
reaction to other anti-inflammatory medications, including
aspirin,
